Reporting in from the VEGAN front line... :)Into the third week of my new plant-based diet, I remain amazed at the delicious tastes I am creating from a whole new palate of ingredients. Armed with a few new cookbooks I've been trying one or two new recipes every day...

I started with Ella Every Day, which is GREAT. Maple Chia Pot is now my go to brekies with warmed fruit and coconut milk. And her spiced lentil soup (I chose NOT to puree) has appeared twice already... As has Sesame Marinated Kale and Miso and Sesame Brown Rice. The nice thing about this cookbook is the philosophy is not dogmatic: if you can manage to eat 80-90% plant-based meals, your body will be much happier.

Isa Does It was recommended by a plant-eating friend who has her own blog and will be my next challenge. Thug Kitchen (profanity alert) was recommended by her partner as strange but with really really tasty recipes... The two soups that I have tried so far certainly bear that out... Hot and Sour soup and White Bean and Cabbage soup both wowed me.

Yes I still intend to cook- on demand from family members - the occasional Lamb Shank with rosemary... So far 100% vegan tho... BELOW SOME PIX TO INSPIRE...
Bought this for a friend - cancer surgeon Dr Gilberto Fleitas in Havana - but had to buy another copy for myself. FASCINATING. As a result, I have moved to a mostly VEGAN diet and am enjoying 4 new cookbooks that are taking me on culinary adventures I never dreamed possible without animal protein. Like Maple Chia Pot porridge for brekkies. Figure if I move to mostly plant based meals at home, my body will be happier and I can splurge without any guilt on the occasional cheese and crackers (my big weakness) or Legendary White Spot Mushroom Burger Triple O...

Will be watching at 12:30 today as HMCS Annapolis is sunk to become
BC's newest marine reef.

My dad was in the US Navy, so I felt drawn to
learn more about this grand old vessel lying in final harbour outside my
window.

Her keel was laid in a Halifax shipyard in 1961 and she launched
in 1963. Interestingly she was the second Canadian vessel carrying the
Annapolis name. The FIRST was a 1918 destroyer purchased by Canada from
the US Navy in 1940 and - per a protocol of that purchase - given a new
name reflective of cities in both countries...

Thanks to @LawDeanHolloway for filling in that she was the first purpose-built helicopter destroyer in the RCN.

Today's HMCS Annapolis
spent most of her life as a training ship on Canada's east and west
coasts. She was apparently the first Canadian ship to carry a
mixed-gender crew.

Onward Annapolis to your final
berth. Her predecessor was towed to Breaker's Yard in Boston for scrap.
Sensitively sunk (apparently all toxic materials removed except the
paint) to become a new home for baby
octopi sounds like a much more relaxing retirement.

Will update this blog with pix of her passage if weather permits.

I am about to head off to get the above little Baobob seedling tattooed on my left calf by Liz (In the Flesh Tattoos), my favourite tattoo artist.

Inspired by my 2013 class (UBC LFS 302a International Field Studies in Sustainable Agriculture Cuba), my students found it during our visit to Cienfuegos Botanical Garden last May.

I had been musing about my next tat for a while, and as we were returning from Topes de Collante - bouncing together down the road in our Russian army truck - I knew (thanks to a great photo taken by Hayley) that this little seedling was IT.

It expresses what I LOVE about teaching (planting a seed), commemorates a great group of students (truly tat-worthy!) and to me also represents the pluck and resilience of the Cuban people (bravely rising up from the grass roots, led by Fidel, to overthrow a brutal dictator and seek a better society).

It is also a powerful symbol. The Baobab tree (Adansonia digitata, a member of the Ceiba family) is often
called the tree of life because it stores life-sustaining water inside
its trunk and branches. In Africa, India, and Madagascar, where the tree
grows in arid regions, the tree’s water is a valuable resource. The
Baobab tree is an ancient survivor; some Baobab trees live for
several thousand years.

When the Spanish brought Africans to Cuba to work as slaves in the sugar fields, these new arrivals adopted the Cuban Ceiba tree - cousin to the African Baobob - as spiritual home to Afro-Cuban religious deities (Orishas), who were
thought to perch in its lofty branches. In particular, the Orisha Elegua, who opens and closes pathways. As a result, Ceibas are very special trees in Cuba: farmers plant and plow around them and they are almost always the centrepiece of community squares and public spaces.

In its fragility, this little Baobob emerging from its seed on the ground also represents to me the vulnerability of today's younger Cubans, who with no direct experience of the Revolution must now draw on the patrimony of the past and the promise of the future to deliver a strong socialist economy based on worker cooperatives, micro-enterprise and transformational state engagement.

According to the bag, this Alberta company uses "Angus beef, lamb and bison - all free-range raised on local ranches and delivered to our kitchen doors fresh each day - together with sun-ripened apples and pears from Okanagan orchards, and butternut squash, pumpkin and spinach greens from our black prairie soils - all delivered fresh not frozen."

Yummy, no? Like the footprint: upgrading byproducts from our local farm sector. Like the reduced carbs. My dogs both LOVE it.

All is perfect except for the environmental footprint of it's bag. Examining the big number in the tiny little triangle, it's a # 81.

I called the Customer Care number posted on the bag and left a message that I needed their advice concerning recycling a # 81 bag.

They called back a half hour ago. Explaining how I loved everything about the product and that my only problem was how to recycle the bag, I asked their advice.

I was vaguely told "it depends on the recycling depot" and that I would have to do my own research on that. But they had several suggestions concerning how I could "re-purpose" it.

"It's a nice sturdy impervious bag - fill it with kitty litter" she suggested.

"Then what?" I asked.

"What do you mean "then what'" she replied.

"Then what happens to the bag?"

"You throw it out" she said.

"Where is out?" I couldn't help myself from asking...

"The garbage" she muttered, sensing a trap...

"Oh you must mean the land fill.... In this impervious, non-recyclable bag?"

I explained to her that as the manufacturer, Champion Petfoods had a life-cycle responsibility for what they placed on the shelf. That I was stepping up to the plate and trying to act responsibly as a consumer with respect to my own footprint (buying the product; now how do I responsibly dispose of the bag?). And that in this regard I was calling for their advice...

After much discussion I ended with the request that someone to get back to me re where I can recycle #81 bags...

I suggested they needed to know the answer to this just as much as I.

In closing I reminded her that I had taken the time to call cause if not solvable I would be challenged to switch brands.

Or perhaps, since this product has so many other things going for it, faced with no other options I may simply mail the bags back to them... Little note on life cycle responsibility attached... :)

Sitting in my most comfortable chair, I've had him on my lap since yesterday afternoon.. Snuggled into his favourite blanket.

He is Juanolo, my wonderful old cat, and he is dying.

Sixteen years ago my daughter thrust him in my arms as a kitten when she went off to University of Victoria. OK, maybe I pried him from her arms. Only daughter. Single mom. Empty nest. :)

For his first few months, I carried him around in a Snugli as I walked my dogs. He's only recently stopped following me on those walks.

My other two cats know. One, the female, crawls up on my lap and lies next to him, seeming to want to share with him her warmth. The other sits close by, watchful.

I sit and write cat emails to close friends, assuring Mavis I am doing just what she would for her old friend if she were here. In the past year, I have begun to think of him as "my little old man". I tell him this and other stories as i massage his cheeks...

Curious what passes as programming choice in the wee hours of the morning. Outer Limits is still going strong. I did catch a few hours sleep. Tonight I will be more practiced.

I went down to shower when the sky lightened and found him quite chilled when I came back, even tho well-bundled. :(

He seems much more comfortable and relaxed on my lap. So there he will stay,

I found a way to arrange a table and my laptop to the right of the chair such that I can get some work done. Twisting ever so slightly. Good time for marking students papers and finishing one of my own.

We have a pact: Juanolo will go when he is ready and I - faithful as was he - will wait with him and keep him comfortable till he does.

It's the least I can do for a great cat.

BIG THUMBS DOWN to Jaguar for their latest series of commercials.

You should know, Jaguar, that no-one has the right to violate our communities by driving like a bat out of hell down its roads. And we will punish brands that imply the right to do so. Check your head: women are amassing wealth faster than men, we are very influential in brand selection, and we like our cars to purr... Try playing nice. Successful visible minority women jumping out from behind the wheel of their Jags in exotic places carrying their own flowers much more persuasive.
for his report Muzzling Civil Servants: Threat to Democracy. See more at http://thetyee.ca/Blogs/TheHook/2013/03/15/government_muzzling/

Muzzling is the name of the game in this theft of our nation. And it doesn't stop at scientists, civil servants in all departments are prohibited from
engaging in public dialogue unless approved by chains of command that
tie directly back to Harper's office. The message is: manage the
message.

Infrastructure is also being muzzled. Witness
the shutdown of Canada's world-renowned freshwater research
station that detects pollution levels in our lakes and rivers and is of
global importance. A station that costs the Canadian taxpayer a mere $2
million a year. Demo crews are in dismantling the houses in their modest little camp to make sure staff "get it"...

Pre-NAFTA,
Canada used "precautionary principle" to identify thresholds for
regulatory compliance/public policy intervention. Post-NAFTA this was
changed to "sound science and risk".

Right
wing, global capitalists - who believe a borderless world is a
beautiful world - interpreted this to mean "take away the science, you
take away the risk..."

If there ain't no scientists there just ain't no say....

Forgetting for the moment about his PAST comments on gay marriage, this new Pope is inspiring many.

Can you imagine if the religious leaders of today were to sit down and wash each others feet?

Maybe we all - from every religion - need to form a "religion coop" where we sit down as members and tell our board (religious leaders from all walks of faith) to quit their fighting and get back to the business of governing the spiritual commons, in which we all have an interest.
As I watered my plants this morning, I found myself telling them how much I'd appreciated their bountiful blooms thru the dark winter months in my north-facing home on the sea. That their soils would rest now but they'd get some fertilizer again as the days got longer — which they're already showing promise of doing!

As I moved from plant to plant, it occurred to me how fortunate are those who have chosen to care for plants or animals as their life's work.

Thoughts that don't comb neatly into one of my five existing blogs (Food, Policy, Coops, Cuba, Governance). Ideas that squiggle their way forward in the early hours over coffee - sparked by the CBC or an email - and beg expression. Musings that call out to be wrangled and set down some place to ripen.

The nice thing about blogging is never having to ask "are u listening?"... :)

How do I know this? Because when my time for blogging is wiped out - as it has been for the past two months - I yearn for it.

In September and early October, I coordinated and played host to a delegation of Cubans visiting IMAGINE 2012 and The QUEBEC SUMMIT ON COOPS, Canada's two premier conferences for IYC 2012. Click here for a report on the outcomes of that visit. Afterwards, my dear Cuban colleague Mavis Alvarez came back to BC for a 5 part speaking tour. Great fun - and some memorable road trips!

From early november until now, business travel, my daughter's wedding in Hawaii and her subsequent move to South Dakota (as a committed re-cycler, Bowen became a staging area for jettisoned "stuff" from the closing of her home in Vancouver) have taken up my life.

Nice 2 b back. :)
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">About to head off to the Bowen Island Cenotaph, I am today remembering my dad, Eric Elis Edvin Holm, who served in the US Navy on a submarine in
the Pacific during World Was II. As he was stationed in Hawaii, my
mother took a small apartment there to be with him when he had shore
leave. They had a wonderful life. He moved to Canada on his retirement
in '71 and died with all his wits about him at 95. :) My daughter Laurel
fell in love <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">with her soulmat<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">e <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Isaac Meyer in Hawaii and I just returned from <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">their beach
wedding<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">... Isaac - who served a year in Iraq - is wearing my dad's wedding ring. Feels like full circle
to me. Thank you, Dad. Thank you Isaac. Two brave men... :)
visioning: starting today everyone needs to IMAGINE AN OBAMA VICTORY. Encourage others to do the same, then hope he gets some smarts on Cuba.
voters to poles, Democrats use passion. Get the passion out this week
folks. We in Canada cannot stand another right-wing US administration.

1. On my webpage, go to the homepage of the blog you like (Food, Policy, Coops, Governance, Cuba, Stuff).

2. click on the RSS "Subscribe" icon on the right hand side of the screen.

3. In the box it opens, click on "View RSS Feed".

If you are using Firefox (may be different with different browsers) it asks you where you want to put the feed icon (menu bar, bookmarks). If you choose menu bar it will always be on the top of your screen and you can click on it anytime to drop down a menu of recent posts and one click will take u there!
